(It’s Not the Technique)
Introduction
Japanese barbers and hairstylists are known for their high level of skill.
Even so, many people feel nervous about getting a haircut in Japan.
They worry about the result.
They worry about saying the wrong thing.
They worry about what to do if something feels off.
But in most cases,
the real problem is not the haircut itself.
The Conclusion (First)
The hardest part of getting a haircut in Japan is
not knowing how to explain what you want.
And there is another layer to that difficulty.
Many people start blaming themselves
for not being able to explain it well.
Why This Feels So Difficult
From my experience as a barber, I see this again and again.
- You don’t know the technical words
- You’re not sure how much you should explain
- You’re worried if it’s okay to stop the haircut and speak up
This does not mean you don’t know what you want.
It simply means
you don’t know how to say it in this situation.
When the culture is unfamiliar, this is completely normal.
Let Me Clear One Important Misunderstanding
I want to be very clear about this.
Not being able to explain well is
not rude, not embarrassing, and not your fault.
In a new country and a new culture,
it is natural for words to disappear.
This is not about English ability or Japanese ability.
It is about comfort and familiarity.
Three Things to Remember (That’s Enough)
If you get a haircut in Japan,
just remember these three things.
- You can show photos
- You can answer with Yes / No
- You can say “This is a little different” during the haircut
You do not need a perfect explanation from the beginning.
A Barber’s Honest Opinion
To be honest,
barbers are not looking for people who speak well.
We pay more attention to people who look unsure or nervous.
Our job is to check, confirm, and adjust together.
Not to judge how well you explain yourself.
If You Prefer Not to Explain at All
Even after reading this, you may still feel uneasy.
That’s okay.
Some people feel more comfortable
when they don’t have to explain anything with words.
So I made a very simple check sheet
that you can use at the barbershop.
(Simple English – You can copy this section)
The real difficulty is simple:
how to explain what you want.
Perfect English is not needed.
If you want something you can use at the barbershop,
I made a simple check sheet.
You don’t need to explain.
Just point and choose.

Reading only is fine. Using it is your choice.
Final Thoughts
Feeling nervous about getting a haircut in Japan is normal.
Even if you can’t explain well, that’s okay.
When words are limited,
care and attention become even more important.
A barbershop should be a place
where you don’t have to speak perfectly to be understood.
